Hi there guys! Welcome to the new GDJ site. I’m LiveandGaming and under orders from our good friend Senpai I’m going to be one of our writers for Anime suggestions. So if you’re stuck for a show to watch or a manga to read, look out for a post from me or feel free to get in touch via the discord.
I even look forward to receiving recommendations from you guys too.
Lets kick things off with one of my all time favourites, Blast of Tempest. Its an anime that ran from October 2012 to March 2013 with the standard 24 episode length that we’ve grown accustom to. BoT is a Bones adaptation of a manga written by Kyō Shirodaira (Spiral, The Record of a Fallen Vampire) published by Square Enix, Gangan Comics in 2010.
The series revolves around a secret world of magic in modern day Japan and draws heavily on two works of William Shakespeare, Hamlet and The Tempest, which are two stories about revenge and retribution though with completely opposite endings. Also two of my favourite plays, just FYI..
Now the story focuses on Fuwa Mahiro, a high school student born into a wealthy family, who comes home to find his family brutally murdered. We’re talking blood on the walls, floors. ceilings… his step sister Aika propped up on a chair like some kind of weird murderous folk art..
After seeing all of this he just ups and disappears for a year, then suddenly hes spotted at his family grave by his childhood friend Takigawa Yoshino, being attacked by the usual shady looking miscreants but displaying some mysterious abilities of his own…like flight..
Yoshino later catches up to him, hoping to find out what happened to his best friend and after the expected “leave me alone I don’t need anyone” routine finds out he’s been looking for the killer to seek his revenge for the murder of his beloved step sister Aika (hes not too overly bothered by his parents, there is a reason for that) and that he was receiving aid from a strange girl stranded on a deserted island in the middle of no where and who talks to him via an enchanted voodoo doll. This strange young lady is our third main character, Kusaribe Hakaze, head of the Kusaribe Clan also known as the “Magician of Genesis” who was stranded on that island by her followers. Hot red head.. full of herself.. you know the type. She is helping Mahiro in exchange for his help in stopping the resurrection of the Tree of Exodus and the end of the world.
Yoshino offers to help the pair out in their endeavour because of his own motivation to find Aika’s killer, being that he was her secret boyfriend, unbeknown to Mahiro..who had some weird relationship going on with her himself and hated the thought of anyone else having her. Yoshino tried real hard to hide this from him by pretending to texting his girlfriend all the time…when hes actually just reading through the old emails he would receive from Aika back in the day.
Now! on to the plot.
The world is basically coming to end, a mysterious petrification “disease” is sweeping the nation claiming countless lives. Our two main protagonists Mahiro and Yoshino, motivated by revenge get roped up in a secret world of magic and murder. Assisting the worlds most powerful mage Hakaze find a way to get back from her now island prison so she can bring this madness to an end (and help find the killer of Mahiro’s family) by stopping the resurrection of the “Tree of Exodus” whose power can bring ruin to the entire world, starting with is blooms causing the petrification that is spreading around.
Full of mystery, deceit, love triangles, heart break and a massive amount of references to Shakespeare this Anime/Manga is a well written story sure to keep your interest if you are a fan of “real world magical” anime and speaking from personal experience a welcome break from the massive amount of “Other world” anime that seems to be around these days.
Give it a watch, sorry for my lack of flare I’m writing this on a tight time slot because if I don’t then Senpai will most definitely lecture me.
See you around nerds!
